Spanish and Latin American Film Festival 2026 returns to UMD

Experience vibrant cinema from Spain and Latin America at UMD’s Spanish and Latin American Film Festival 2026, running select Wednesdays this Fall in Jiménez Hall!
The Spanish & Portuguese, Cinema & Media Studies, and Latin American and Caribbean Studies present the Spanish and Latin American Film Festival 2026 by Pragda. Taking place throughout the Fall semester in Jiménez Hall, Room 1205, each screening begins at 4:00 PM and will feature complimentary refreshments.
The festival kicks off on September 23rd with an opening presentation by Manel Lacorte, Juan Carlos Quintero-Herencia, and Parker Brookie, festival organizer.

- La Salsa Vive (Wed., Sept. 23 | Presented by Juan Carlos Quintero-Herencia)
Themes: Cultural identity, music history, and community resilience through the legacy of Afro-Caribbean salsa music.
- Bacurau (Wed., Oct. 7 | Presented by Parker Brookie)
Themes: Resistance against neo-colonial exploitation, community solidarity, and socio-political satire within modern rural Brazil.
- Aztec Batman (Wed., Oct. 21 | Presented by Chris Lewis)
Themes: Reimagining mythology, anti-colonial reinterpretation of superhero tropes, and Mesoamerican history.
- La Infancia Clandestina (Wed., Nov. 11 | Presented by Laura Demaría)
Themes: Coming-of-age under dictatorship, political activism, loss of innocence, and double lives during Argentina's "Dirty War".
- Chinas (Wed., Dec. 2 | Presented by Mehl Penrose)
Themes: Immigration, multi-generational identity struggles, cultural assimilation, and belonging among the Chinese diaspora in Spain.
