Ocean Stirrings: Dramatized Readings from a Work of Fiction by Merle Collins

Center for Literary and Comparative Studies | English | Latin American and Caribbean Studies Center Saturday, September 6, 2025 2:30 pm - 4:00 pm Tawes Hall, 1121, Ulrich Recital Hall

The Embassy of Grenada in Washington, D.C., and the Department of English at the University of Maryland, supported by Carivision Community Theatre, present "Ocean Stirrings: Dramatized Readings from a Work of Fiction by Merle Collins," a novel inspired by the life story of the Caribbean mother of Malcolm X and his seven siblings. 

The event offers a chance to to hear both adults and young people from the community use their voices to trace a story beginning in 19th century Grenada and moving to the 20th century USA.  

Selected readings by author Merle Collins. Also introducing L. Dev Hatcher, a new children's writer from the US-Grenada diaspora community, and the work of John Henry, a Caribbean/Grenadian artist selected by the Embassy of Grenada. A thought-provoking, commemorative Caribbean/US journey supported by artist Peter Humphrey on the steelpan and snacks provided by the Embassy of Grenada.
