La Casa de Mi Mamá: My Mom's House is a two act bilingual play that explores the lives of two 24-year olds as they navigate their new homes. The story is told through two dueling timelines, one in El Salvador in 2024 and the other in the United States in 2004. In 2024 we follow Klaus as he arrives in El Salvador after being deported from the U.S. as he reconnects with his love of cinema and his childhood best friend Jonathan. Jonathan is a journalist, activist for reproductive healthcare, and a person who stutters and always speaks his truth. Even when it puts him in harm's way. In 2004 we follow Francisca as she arrives in the U.S after illegally crossing the border with her 4-year old son to reunite with her husband Ernesto. Ernesto is an alcoholic who came to the U.S. to achieve the American dream but is coming to terms with the fact that the dream is a lie. This is a play about how language is vital to our connection with oneself and others. It celebrates the ways that dysfluencies, slang, and accents contribute to making bilingual people’s speech so beautiful and unique. This is a story of intergenerational trauma and how we must not only break those cycles but begin new ones.
